Episode 016: Doctopreneurs: Doctors Launching Products - A How To Guide Discussion with Drs. Dana Rice & John Renucci

One of the most overlooked aspects of medical training is what to do after you finish your training. Especially any guidance for how you introduce new products to market as a physician. Doctors are coming up with products all the time that keep us healthier, make our life easier, or doctor's lives easier but there is usually not a lot known by those launching new products about how to do it. And what the pitfalls are. Today, I will discuss just those things with two physician entrepreneurs.

My first guest is Dr. Dana Rice who developed a novel app for your phone to help track urinary tract infections. Although it isn't something we like to talk about, over 60% of women suffer from UTIs at some point of their life - most commonly in their twenties - and don't have anywhere to turn. Dr. Rice developed the app to better help her patients control their symptoms and help her treat them. Without having any technical background in app development - Dr. Rice had to navigate the waters blind to get her product to market. In this episode, she discusses her missteps and successes.

My second guest is Dr. John Renucci, a plastic surgeon who decided to develop a unique line of skin care products for men because he saw a void in the market. His story is different in that there was much more that he had to learn about chemistry, manufacturing, marketing, regulations, the FDA, and more. Although the journey was a long one for him, he successfully got his product out into an extremely crowded market of skin care products and continues to see increased sales.

Join me in this departure from our usual topics as we learn a little bit about the entrepreneurial side of medicine. Even if you aren't a physician, you will find that their obstacles are not much different from those faced by others launching products in different industries.
