Pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) are one of the 'middle men' in health care that have recently come under fire for the added expense they bring in the prescription drug market. What was once a relatively unknown player in the health care delivery process, PBMs are finding themselves with a target on their back for the first time.
Few realize that pharmacy benefit managers play a large role in the cost of their drugs through insurance plans. Dr. Mary Tipton, a med-peds specialist in Utah, is part of the Practicing Physicians of America which helped to successfully lobby the White House to start addressing the problems caused by PBMs. Although the executive orders only address the cost of prescription medications within the Medicare system - it is a big first step in controlling the cost of medicine in the United States.
