Episode 013: Assume the Physician. Making Sure Residents Take Naps and Other Silly Rules by the ACGME with Author Dr. John Hunt.

Would residents (doctors in training) forget to rest and nap if there was no bureaucrat making rules regulating it? Would people leave rotten food in refrigerators without ACGME accrediting body recommendations? Who exactly is in charge in the hospital teaching centers? Do the hospitals function to get people better and who new doctors how to do it or do they exist to enforce rules from far off bureaucracies at the expense of educating new doctors and treating their patients?

In this episode, Eric and John discuss his hilarious book, Assume the Physician, which describes the first year of residency of Dr. Eddie Marcus. Dr. Marcus is a family practice resident attempting to navigate through a system that seems rigged to prevent him from taking care of patients, learning, and becoming an independent thinker. The book is styled along the same theme as the classic book, Catch-22, highlighting its protagonist continually being blocked by a bureaucratic system that insists it is there to help him.
Using real life examples, Dr. Hunt shows the ludicrous nature of the rule making and how it sincerely interferes with the primary objective of teaching hospitals - teaching young doctors how to get patients better. Join in as we discuss the ACGME, JCAHO, and others in how they unintentionally work against their stated mission.
Author Dr. John Hunt is a Pediatric Pulmonologist/Allergist/Immunologist and the creator of the hilarious book, Assume the Physician.
