Episode 063: Are Non-profit Hospitals Making a Killing? A Discussion with Dr. Richard Menger
Today's discussion is about hospitals. Namely, what does it mean to be non-profit? Over half of all hospitals in the United States are not for profit entities - but do they really look differently than for profit institutions? That is the question that few politicians or those debating health care speak about. In many instances, one would be hard pressed to know whether hospitals are for profit by how they run.
Therefore, every health system looks like any other corporation and the pay within for administrators is rarely different. The main difference between the hospital systems turns out that the tax status changes allowing a huge tax advantage for non-profit hospitals over for-profit health businesses. The practical considerations are many that affect communities and the field of competition. For instance, not only do the local cities lose a tax base with every non-profit piece of land but the fact that those hospitals no longer pay taxes it gives them a significant advantage over private physician offices, clinics, and medical rehabilitation centers.
